Meet John T.

I'm John Tillman (John T.) Martin - Jacksonville, FL born and raised.

The great 16th century sculptor Michelangelo once said "every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it." At risk of sounding overly sophisticated, I find this to be true in the world of woodworking. Wood, being a medium, has a pre-existing image buried beneath years of growth. It is the job of the artist to envision, discover and expose those images. I will never forget the first time I witnessed the effects of a planer on an old, decrepit piece of wood. Wood that at one time was uncultivated and without purpose only then to be uncovered and exposed. It then might be used as a desk or instrument, having been repurposed and given shape. Over time, I have come to notice and appreciate the possibility of subtlety and intricacy in woodworking while simultaneously accompanying and maintaining functionality. In doing so, I have developed a style which translates into most all of my pieces.  I consider myself an artist as much as a carpenter. In a world of immediacy, I have a deep appreciation for quality and longevity. I try and incorporate these concepts and provide a product that can be passed down for generations.
